Suspended between history and art, Marina di Ragusa is an ideal starting point to visit beautiful places in the heart of the Sicilian Baroque including Ragusa, Modica, Scicli, and Noto – an UNESCO World Heritage Site and scenery of the novels by Andrea Camilleri with his famous Inspector Montalbano.
Coming here on holiday or for a business trip is an unique opportunity for gourmets who will find a variety of local dishes and wines to experience.
Ragusa, called the “City of Bridges” for the presence of three very picturesque structures, is one the most important Baroque art spots.
Destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, it’s been reconstructed and divided into two large districts: Upper Ragusa, situated on the plateau, and Ragusa Ibla, risen from the ruins of the ancient city and rebuilt following the ancient medieval streets.
The latter contains the most significant architectural treasures, some fifty churches including the baroque masterpiece of the Cathedral of San Giorgio. Passing the Conversation Club you descend toward the Ibleo garden with the two churches of S. Giacomo and Dei Cappuccini.
Scicli is one of the main centers of the Sicilian Baroque route. From above, before entering the city, you can enjoy a beautiful view, especially on the church of San Bartolomeo. The high ground is dominated by the former convent of the Cross.
The heart of the city, a filming spot of “Inspector Montalbano”, is via Penna with the Town Hall (the Commissariat of Vigata) and Palazzo lacono (the police station in Montelusa).
Many examples of buildings and churches in Baroque style remain: Palazzo Benevento peculiar facades and even the churches of St. lgnazio and St. Bartolomeo, who keeps a crib with 65 life-size wooden statues.
Modica, the “City of a hundred churches” is a town perched on the slopes of the Iblei mountains, famous worldwide for its chocolate.
The first edition of the Treccani encyclopedia calls it “the most distinctive city in Italy after Venice.
Divided into Lower and Upper Modica, has interesting buildings like the church of Santa Maria di Betlem, the former convent of San Domenico, seat of the municipality, where you can admire the cloister, the church of the Carmine with its beautiful rose window of the XV century, as well as the Tower in the Castle of the Counts which comes along with the spiers of St. Peter and St. George.
In Upper Modica you can visit the baroque church of San Giorgio, built at the top of a staircase whose facade, soaring in the central part, is very scenic. Returning on Corso Umberto is the Church of San Pietro, which rivals for theatricality with that of San Giorgio.
The birthplace of Salvatore Quasimodo, Nobel Prize for Literature, is considered by many an essential destination.
Called the ‘Garden of Stone’, Noto is recognized as the capital of the Sicilian Baroque.
After the terrible earthquake of 1693, the ruins of the ancient city were replaced by churches, monasteries and palaces at the sides of a long street, the Corso, punctuated by three scenic squares.
First, Piazza dell’lmmacolata, overlooking the Church of San Francesco and the end of the very long Monastery of the Santissimo Salvatore.
Just across the Church of Santa Chiara is Piazza del Municipio, where secular buildings, Palazzo Ducezio and Palazzo Landolina, and sacred buildings (the Chiesa Madre and the Palazzo Vescovile) alternate.
The third is Piazza XVI Maggio, with Villetta Ercole, a small garden which takes its name from a statue of the hero, and the Church of San Domenico, with its unusual convex facade.
In Noto the third Sunday of May is the world famous “Infiorata”, a large floral decoration theme that covers all of Via Nicolaci.
The gastronomic symbol of Noto is the almond; almond cream, diluted with cold water, becomes the refreshing and very sought after Sicilian almond milk.
